Inspiring Applications of Tubular Daylighting

March 12 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Free – $5.00

Using tubular daylighting devices has traditionally been thought of only as a functional way to bring natural light into building design and overcome limitations of windows and traditional skylights (commonly used techniques for side and top lighting, respectively). However, architects encounter lighting challenges from not only a practical, but also an aesthetic (design ) standpoint and are now exploring how TDDs can be used as a design tool.

This session will study inspiring applications of Tubular Daylighting Devices (TDDs) around the world that deliver natural light into unique spaces and/or create visually appealing natural lighting to complement an overall design. By merging both form and function, architects can create inspiring environments that also meet the health, safety, welfare as well as sustainability goals for the building.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand how TDDs can be used as an effective daylighting strategy differently than windows and skylights

• Discover the role TDDs can play with health, safety, and welfare of building occupants

• Review how TDDs can be used as a daylighting strategy for sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives

• Explore how TDDs can be implemented in inspiring and innovative ways with both design and functional objectives being met.

NEAL DIGERT, Ph.D., MIES

BIOGRAPHY

Neall Digert, Ph.D., MIES, Vice President – Innovation & Market Development for Kingspan Light + Air | North America, has over thirty-five years of consulting and education experience working in the energy/lighting/daylighting design and research fields, specializing in the design and application of advanced lighting and daylighting systems for commercial Institutional, and industrial building applications. He possesses a unique technical background in optical daylighting systems, architectural daylighting solutions, and advanced energy and lighting strategies, and the psychological and physiological impact of light on humans. As Kingspan Light + Air | North America’s Vice President of Innovation & Market Development, Dr. Digert draws upon his expertise in the design and consulting arenas to build public awareness of new advanced optical daylighting technologies, guide future product developments and refinements, develop new global sales and marketing strategies, and pioneer new design and application tools and protocols to support the successful integration of optical daylighting products into today’s commercial, educational, and industrial buildings. Dr. Digert is active in the global daylighting design and performance metric development process, serving as Director of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) from 2011-2013, past Vice Chairperson of the IES Daylighting Committee, a founding member and past Chairperson of the IES Daylighting Metric Committee and co-developer of the Spatial Daylight Autonomy (sDA) and Annual Sunlight Exposure (ASE) metrics, Vice-chairperson of the NEMA Daylighting Management Council, chairperson for the NEMA Daylight Management Council’s Daylighting Symposium Task Group, Second Vice President of the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) Skylight and Sloped Glazing Council, and Chairperson for the National Fenestration Rating Council’s (NFRC) Tubular Daylighting Device Task Group responsible for developing the VTannual product testing and performance standard for Optically-complex fenestration. Dr. Digert’s technical background encompasses illumination engineering, building energy engineering, and the psychology of perception relative to luminous environments. Dr. Digert holds a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering, a Master of Science degree in building energy/civil engineering, and a Doctorate in building energy/civil engineering, all earned at the University of Colorado.
